Approaching Tensions around the New Era of Pass/Fail USMLE Step 1 Scores across the Continuum: A Collaborative GEA/GIR/GSA Webinar
Session Description:
The USMLE Step 1 Examination became Pass/Fail starting January 2022. This has multiple implications throughout medical education, including the medical student to resident continuum, affecting residency program directors, medical school administrators. On February 16, three AAMC affinity groups and medical student representatives will convene a panel to discuss this complicated and important issue, providing key perspectives from the various involved stakeholders. Tensions have surfaced from the perspective of curricular structure, availability of student performance data, academic and career advising, and supporting success in residency applications. These tensions involve a broad range of institutional stakeholders, represented by GEA, GIR and GSA constituents, and cross-communication is critical. Topics including student advising, test timing, ERAS Applications, holistic application review and USMLE Step 2 will be explored and discussed. Participants will learn that expertise to help with these issues may be within their own medical school. There will be an opportunity for attendees to participate in focus groups at a later date after the webinar to further discuss, refine and identify next steps on these issues.
